This is the most awful hotel. Crowded, rude staff, cheap and nasty, etc the list goes on and on. I packed up and moved down the road to Halekulani and that was the best move i had done.<BR>
Whatever you do, dont stay at the hilton.

Steve M - After reading your review, I wonder if you 1.) did your research before booking your hotel and 2.)if you stayed at the HHV at all. Yes, it's expensive (you will get charged for EVERYTHING) and they don't have a golf course, but any travel website will tell you that. Why on earth would you eat at a hotel restaurant if you did not expect to pay inflated prices??? ALL hotel restaurants overchage. You were steps away from tons of great, affordable restaurants on the Waikiki strip. One more thing, if you wanted the "real Hawaii", what the heck were you doing on the busiest, most tourist bogged strip of all the islands???? If you stayed at another resort outside of Honolulu (either on Oahu or one of the other islands), it would have been a lot calmer. It's your fault for not doing your homework.
That being said, if you enjoy staying at large resorts and want to be centrally located, HHV is for you. In my experience, the staff is very nice and the accomodations are comfortable. There are several world-class restaurants on site that are very good, but expect to pay for that treat. There is also an ABC store on the grounds, which made it easy for everyone to buy sunscreen, goggles/snorkels (don't buy them on the beach, they are a 1/3 of the price at ABC), bootled water and knick-knacks. If you don't feel like using the overpriced mini-bar, buy water, fruit, soda and coffe at ABC. You can use the coffee machine all you want for free. It's the nasty, hotel coffee that costs extra.
If you want to chill out in the rain forest, go elsewhere! The Waikiki strip is like a beachfront Madison Ave. It is busy and crowded most of the time.

Don't be deceived by the pictures - if you want an "ocean view" you may or may not get it even if the room description says "deluxe ocean view. We overlooked the harbor and what used to be their hotsy-totsy "lagoon" which is nothing more than a dead pond. Don't count on your room being ready when you get there. Do count on everything costing an arm and a leg (lots of things seem to be $3.50: cup of coffee including in-room do-it-yourself, small bottle of water, 1/2 of an embarrassingly small papaya - even cheap breakfast pastries are $2.50 a piece) - so don't even accept a mini-bar key). The mattresses are terrible and without fitted sheets you'll be like a mummy in the morning. elevators are iffy and not all of them work - and are not air conditioned so a 5 minute ride (stops every floor even if the cab is full) can leave you dripping with sweat). No exhaust fans in the bathrooms so if you have kids in the room you have to be careful if you need to open the w.c. room door. Do expect to pay nearly $100 for breakfast (w/ tip) and over $150 for dinner for a family of 4 with teenagers - (w/ tip but w/o drinks). And as for staff? They think they're god's gift; the customer's NEVER right. Considering you're in the middle of the Pacific Ocean they KNOW they have you over a barrel. PS if you're a golfer there is NO course on campus, or if you're a tennis player there isn't a single court on campus (but they have a HUGE convention and banquet center so it's great for groups that have no intention of leaving the campus except for group bus tours to other rip-offs like the PCC). This place is NOT Hawaii. The only thing going for it right now (summer 2003) is that because much of Waikiki beach has been washed away over time and is sorely in need of restoration, the beach at this end of Waikiki is wider. It's the kind of place where they remove the coconuts from the coconut palm trees for fear that if one fell there would be a huge liability.
